These mature-aged clients presented with a very specific brief: they needed a home built on their sloping block that would be free of any level changes so that they could age without the inconvenience of steps on their block. The response is a modern, comfortable home with only one step in the project – accommodated by the filling of the block and a clever yet restrained design.
The front of the building is reminiscent of iconic 1960’s residential housing with simple geometry which accommodates the human scale, balanced with the loftiness of the floating skillion roof. Internally, this composition results in spacious and bright living and private spaces; the highlight windows offering glimpses to the blue sky and bringing in soft, natural light.
These highlight windows are featured along the southern, eastern and northern facades of the building and form part of the passive solar design strategy, along with the generous shading offered by the roof over the alfresco dining area, to bring in morning and warm winter sunlight whilst limiting heat gain during the summer months. The windows also provide a sense of continuity throughout the linear design of the house along the narrow block.
The careful yet simple planning of the home is first understood upon entry with the three bedrooms, a private living area and the service spaces neatly arranged around the central hallway that leads to the open plan kitchen, living and dining spaces towards the rear of the property. Here the loftiness of the design is appreciated with 4m high ceilings and a light-filled living and entertaining space. The simple palette of white finishes with stainless steel fittings is softened by the warmth of the timber floorboards.
Again, the simple geometry and clean lines of the modernist style accommodate the human scale and lead the experience of the space seamlessly to the covered alfresco entertaining area, backyard and swimming pool beyond. In these exterior spaces the needs of the clients have taken precedence once more with a neat, low maintenance garden and a walking swimming pool.
